The tree switch is in the collar. It makes the signal beep faster when the collar is in the upright position such as when a coon dog has treed. I have deer hounds, but I do have one collar that has a tree switch built in it. The only reason I bought the collar was because I got a deal on it. My tree switch collar seems to track just a well as my other collars but the rhythm of the beep is totally different than a traditional type tracking collar when the collar is tilted up (or down if it is placed on the dog incorrectly). If I was ordering brand new collars for deer hunting I would not buy another tree switch collar. On the other hand if you find a ''steal of a deal'' on a tree switch collar in your frequency my opinion would be to buy it.

I know tracking systems are expensive, but if you go with an Garmin Astro(either 220 or 320) with a matching collar. I don't think you would be disappointed. You can pick them up used for a reasonable price.

I'm not sure where here is, but if they are the type of swamp were a dog can be gone 2 or 3 days, you may be better served with what I call a Beep beep tracking system. If your running 5 second collar response time the battery life in the rechargeable collars of the astros is about 22 hours where as the wildlife or quick track systems give you days or weeks. Range is not significantly different. Range depends a lot on what kind of antenna system you run with each of the systems.
