Here in Southwest Mississippi, timber companies and one bad hurricane have just about eliminated all of the old growth timber we had. I'm not complaining about timber companies, trees are a renuable resource. My father and uncle both row crop pine trees on the family property. Over the last 30 years, pine trees have been planted, cut planted again and so on. This has led to thousands of acres of cutover land and in turn, our bobcat population has exploded. A cutover is paradise for a bob. I can't coon/squirrel hunt much at home anymore but I do think we are missing a great opportunity in not harassing these cutover bobcats. I switched from hounds to curs several years ago. I've got two Mountain Cur pups right now that I plan on getting started on tree game but when they get old enough, I'm going to try to start them on cutover bobs. This is relatively flat land down here, with creek and river bottoms. And so much of it is cutover.
If anyone has any experience with hunting in this type situation, I would appreciate your input.

I've never hunted cats either, but here in E. Cen. Al. it's the same. You will see more cat tracks than deer... Deer hunters always kill a few each year. I've accounted for three or four.. I think if you get your dogs going on cats, most all hunt clubs around you will want you to kill them. If any clubs have rabbits, quail, and turkeys bobcats kill a bunch each year.
Good Luck with it... Get-em going and call me , sounds like a lot of fun.. LOL

Sure will James. Since I posted the original msg., some things have changed. I now have 4 litter mate cur pups that are just over 3 months old. They are 62% Kemmer Stock and full of fire. I've started working with them on bobcat scent and plan on getting them focused on bobcat only. It's an experiment and may not work, but sure will be fun. I know some deer hunters that lease about 300 acres of timber land that's mostly cutover. Last year they killed 10 cats while on stands on that property alone. Thanks for the response and I'll keep ya updated.

There must not be many cat hunters on here. The pups are progressing real good. They're 7 months old and when the weather breaks, are going to get started on some intense training. We'll see how it works......
