I know some people who do a test on them and tune em. I dont but ours usually talk 10 - 15 miles depends terrain and weather a lot. Some radios do a lil less and the 50 and 75 watts can talk a long ways. I have a uniden solaro 25 watt and it does good.

Get you an output meter and 'build' an adjustable (sliding) antenna. They have one at our local radio shack they use. Then hook up everything up and adjust your antenna while keying up, it's a pretty simple process actually.

I've never heard of any school just for working on radios. If you go to school for working on electronics that would work with a little understanding of how a radio works.
Bryant I'm not sure about a VHF radio but a cb should be basically the same other than transmitting on a differant frequency and having a little more output power but adjusting the antenna does nothing but set your swr not tune the radio.

That is what I understand popcorn. I have an understanding of electricity from college physics classes. I just would like to know how to tweak them. The skill does not serve much purpose, but it sure interests me.

Not sure about the VHF radios but there are service manuals out there for cb radios that show the proper way to tune them with the right equipment. I'm sure you can find them if ya look.

We just installed some in our tractors with a magnetic antenna and it is talking up to 20 miles. I aint sure if it is because the antennas is on top of the tractors and are so high or wat. It honestly surprises me with them cheap antennas how good they talk.
