Alright fellas I have a few questions. I am not even close to a bay dog expert. I have never owned any. I always go hunting with my buddies and they have the bay dogs.
So I'm looking for opinions on the best breeds and lines within those breeds. In your own opinion.
The guys I hunt with always go for hybrid vigor. They have a few BMC's but mainly plott/cat and plott/cur crosses. I still think some these dogs have to much mouth.
I also now not all dogs in a blood line are as good as others. I'm just looking for a breed or line of Bay dog that has worked the most successfully with the least amount of culls.
Also if you could list any lines or hunters that have crossed dogs but have bred it for generations to create a new line of bay dog for the hunters own kennel.
Thanks

It's like Ford VS Chevy . Depends on what you like to hunt . It cost the same to hunt a sorry dog as it does to hunt a good dog . And it cost the same to own an ugly dog as it does a pretty dog . But I think the ugly ones make the best hunting dogs . Some likes currs and some likes to hear that hound music . You have silent hounds and mouthy currs . Thats a tough one to answer . It's kinda a personal preference . I favor the Catahoulas but own plotts , OMCBA's and crosses of all . Even some hound mixed with the currs .

I like Catahoulas, the bloodlines that go back to the Wager bloodlines seem to work well for me, they have alot of working ablility. However there are many good catahoula breeders out there though

I'm pretty well on board for straight up catahoulas. We usually have either a plott or walker in the pack for a little bit of noise. I don't want a totally open dog but just a hint of where they're going, part of the fun is hearing the race.
I've got my own dogs and breed them, so I'm not much help on bloodlines, of course I like mine. lol My best advice there is find someone that HUNTS their dogs, lots of the heart and hunt are being bred out, pretty counter productive in my opinion. There are still some good lines out there that you can pretty well bank on, nobody can claim 100%, look for 80% or better and you'll be in good shape. When you start comparing numbers to work ratio, you'll be shocked at how little success seems to be the norm. Pretty sad, in my opinion.

I'm no bay dog expert.. This only what I have heard, I hear the Kemmer strain of curs are a pretty good all round dog. These dogs will tree sq. cats, bear, and will also without a doubt bay a hog. My pup is from the Kemmer strain and I have never seen a pup at his age have so much hunt. He is mostly a combo dog sq/coon but will not hit the ecollar if he bays a hog. His Grandad and momma will bay a hog in a minute if one present it self. I do know there are alot of hog hunters who hunt this strain and are very pleased.

I like a full blood Catahoula but would like a little better nose, so I've just recently bred mine to a cracker jack running walker. We'll see how they turn out. I've crossed Cats with bird dogs years ago and got some good bay dogs.
