Well trouble first off what are you hunting with this rifle???but i would have to say that NEF has some good rifles and lots of cals, to choice from, the .280 rem is a good deer rifle and plenty big enuff for elk, but it sure would help if we new what you was hunting, good luck hunting and have a great day.

I agree, what will you be hunting? ?? If it is deer Im gunna say get a 243BAR or something similar......... The automatic action will allow for light recoil and the 243 is plenty to take down deer sized game and doubles as an awsome varmint gun......... Now if you are hunting something like Black-Bear or Elk Im gunna have to upgrade to the 30-06 or something like that, keep in mind the 30-06 kicks like a mule in some rifles with heavy-bullets so you may be better off with the 280Rem like was said before......... The 280Remington shoots flat and has enough knock-down for large-game......... Think about it like this the 280Rem is the same size bullet as a 7mm with alot less powder......... Also the 308Win might be something to think on but without knowing what you will be hunting it is kind of hard to narrow it down.........-tim

Now I can give you some advise, If money is a factor buy a brand of rifle that fits your pocket book first, all guns now days are good at best, most gun makers now days make what they call youth models look for one of thoughs, for deer you would be best off with the .280 rem, but keep in mind that the .280 ammo is a little expensive and a lot of stores like wal-mart mite not have it, the .270 is a great deer rifle also, I see here some guys recomend a .243, but I wouldnt, its a little light for a large deer with a poor shot placement, guns like the .280 and .270 have way more knock down power and are more forgivin on poor shot placements, this a lot less chance of the wounded deer getting away, but keep in mind that you need to shoot the gun and get good with it and learn whee to hit the deer, you should beable to find a rifle range, or sportsmen/woman club in your area that will give you advise/help if needed, I wish you all the luck and this is a great place to get help, Have a great day.

The key to using 243 cal is bullet choice. A federal premium 85 gr hp.will stop a deer in its tracks. And is somewhat forgiving in minor misplacement of shot.Ive been using one for over twenty years.A little practice and the right bullet and they are good for groundhogs right up to deer and bear. For bear a Rem core loc 100 gr will do the job.

bearhunter, the .243 is a good gun but i think its a little on the light side for deer in the hands of a person that needs advise on what a good rifle is for deer hunting, I have a 6mm rem, and its a very good rifle, it shoots the same slug as the .243, I reload a 75 gr hollow point and it will with out a dought kill deer and ive killed a good number ofim with it but out past a couple hundred yards you can just about plan on tracking it, the area i hunt 500 yards can be a very common distance to shoot game and i find the 30 cals to be the best, i mostly hunt the open fields with my .300 win mag but have takein a pile of deer with my .280 out to 500 yards, ive done my share of goverment hunting and its allowed me to test guns and i find with out good amount of retained energy, deer can be hard to keep down past 200 yards, i just think a little bigger piece of lead would do this young lady better, but try to stay away from the big mags with all the recoil, I would recomend something that shoots atleast a minimum of a 140 grains of lead, thus lessining the chance of a wounded deer getting away and spoiling the experience for a new comer to the sport.
thats just my .2 cents

Hey trouble, I bagged a nice deer today, took it at a little over 300 yards with the .280, I got a pic of it laying out in the field and also got a pic of a bald eagle sitting in the field, Ill post pics of the deer and eagle when i get back from hunting tomorrow or monday night after work, i cant post tehm tonight, I let my hunting buddy take my truck home so I didnt have to drive there and back tonight and he can just pick me up in the morning, to go hunting, its are last day for the gun season, due to work, but will have a few days to muzzy hunt after gun season, have a great day.

Can't go wrong with the Marlin lever gun chambered in 38-55. I reload for a young man that shoots one now. Plenty of power with a cast 250gr. flat point bullet and doesn't have the recoil of the modern rounds. Sweet shooting little rifle.

If you are shooting 100-200yrds get a Marlin336LeverGun in 30-30Winchester, in my opinion they dont make a better rifle for hunting......... The only way I would use anything else is if I was gunna go hunt moose or grizzlybear or something similar......... I shoot 150grain bullets in mine and they perform flawlessly on anything I shoot with it, also it is light and does not kick enough to amount to anything......... If you will be shooting farther away go for something like a 243Win or 270Win or even a 280Rem all three will serve you well without much kick but of course the bigger the gun the bigger the kick so Id stay away from anything much more than 270.........-tim

the 30/30 would be a great gun if she isnt hunting in farm fields or some other type of open land, i own a marlin lever 45/70 and a few brownings, NEF's remingtons, but id have to recomend the NEF if she is in open land and the .280 has little to no felt recoil and it will reach out and touch them, have a great day.
