My cousin Lucas and I went hunting this morning in Zion Chapel, AL.We heard no birds on the roost. At 8:40 we struck a bird and went to him,but he was across the creek. We were standing at the creek bank calling to get him to strike again, and after about 10 min. of calling off and on he hammered :oabout 50 yard from us through the hardwoods across the creek!Unable to position ourselves closer we droped down against two trees. The bird would answer every time we called but wouldn't come in eye sight of us.Then I seen him about 40yards out full strutt, told Lucas he was straight to his left, since he was the shooter because I got a bird wednsday. After that glimse he disapered down stream of us.Lucas turnt into position.I started doing some soft purring with my slate,we could tell it was firing him up,because he was double gobbling every time!I went silent on the calling when Lucas said he seen the bird coming, because i didn't want him to know exacly where to look at.Then eventually the bird came just to the other side of the creek in some thick mess,he was walking and looking for that hen real good, but when he steped just upstream from a tree blocking Lucas' shot, ALL HE FOUND WAS A TURKEY LOAD!It was 10:00am when he shot, and thank the good lord there was a tree I could walk across to get to the other side on.I didn't feel like swiming today, although my legs were shaking so bad I just about fell in anyway.
The bird had 91/2 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. ;D
there was also another bird killed this morning by a fellow club member that had a 11 3/8 in beard,1 1/2 in spurs and 21lbs but didn't get a pic.
