i got my garmin astro today, i got it out and messed with it and i like it already. the collars are charging right now and im gonna put the hounds in the woods tonight and give it a try. the gps functions are very good and i turned one collar on just to mess with it and it works great.
ill let you know how it turns out in the woods. im gonna run a garmin collar and a regular tracking collar on each dog until i get comfortable with the astro.

ya, im keeping the quicktrack also.... it lets me track the other dogs in the club. this garmin is more for coon hunting than deer hunting. i have used the gps part of it a little bit in the last 2 days and its great..... im gonna try to turn some dogs out this evening and see how i like the collars.... if i can beat the bad storm thats headed this way.

me and maggie went to the game reserve before dark and "messed around" she dont really try to hunt when the sun is up... there is a bad storm rollin in and i just wanted to try the unit out. she only got out to about 75 yards from me and kinda followed me around... the unit is great and i think its gonna be something i cant live without once i get used to it. it take ALL the guess work out of it.
it started to get dark and the storm was coming so i hurried her to the truck before she struck a track and i had to go a mile and a half in the rain and lightning lol

ive been hunting with the astro and it is the ONLY way to coon hunt. it saved me miles of walking. and showed me where all the trails are so i dont have to walk in the thicket. anyone that is not getting one because they heard someone say they didnt like it, forget about what they said.... they obviously dont know how to use it. its a great unit.

im keepin my quicktrack unit... it gets a lot more range... but inside of 4 miles you cant beat the astro. i dont think the astro is the right thing for deer dogs, but it is really good for coon hunting. it will be used for deer hounds, but i will have a regular tracking collar behind it for the long range.

ive just used the little rubber one that comes on it. i am gonna get me a long range antenna for those nights i cant get them back in range. but i havent had problems with it yet. even if they get out of range, it shows where they were when you lost them. if you go to the last point it had them, they will most likely pick back up easily.
deer hunting with dogs is where you would really need the long range antenna. coon dogs usually stay within a mile or two.
