That was pretty much the sentiment friday evening for Renzy and I as we completly shot out and had to walkout watching squirrels timbering through the trees as HotRod put them up one after the other!
The day started off like this, Renzy and I met up with Daniel Schomer and Swawn Herrin just before daylight. We all got out of our trucks and began getting our stuff together as we chatted back and forth. I knew we was in trouble when Shwan said, "did you bring a shotgun?" Sure enough, all three of us had brought 22's and Renzy was stuck with toting the meat and potatoes of the bunch with his trusty 870. Problem was, he had just short of one box of shells. I had another shotgun in the truck but opted for the 22 anyway due to the shell shortage. I won't make that mistake again! The squirrels were staying close to their holes and we had to hunt real hard to pick up the 10 we got for the morning. Naturally, we let a few get away on us.
During lunch Renzy and I drove all over trying to find shotgun shells. Finally got us a couple boxes at the NAPA store, at a PREMIUM price no less! These were supposed to be some sure enough get em dead shotgun shells too?? I never shot and of the Remington Nitros before and thats all they had so thats what we got! (Words of wisdom from the hindsight professor: SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!) Daniel and Shawn wanted to spend some one on one time with their young dogs so, we hit the woods about 2:30 and it was hit and miss for 45 minutes or so. We started off ok 3 for 3 but that 3rd one cost us dearly! He was way up and it took us 1/2 a box of shells a piece to get him out! You could tell we were hitting him but the shells just didn't have enough of something to kill him. At that point I tried to cal for reinforcements but nobody answered. Anyway, we went through a dry spell for a few minutes and then,...................it was ON! Just as hard and fast as we could go. Right up to the last tree when we had one shell a piece and after we both shot we had to pray that the squirrel was gonna fall! Then wouldn't you know it, when he hits the ground, Renzty spies another one up there. I had my pistol with me so I tried to get him out but I have a hard enough time hitting coons with it! LOL
Honestly, we could not have had a better hunt if we would have had a case of shells! I got so tickled at Renzy, he was hating on them squirrels like a pro! LOL He'd pick up sticks and throw them at squirrels on the way out of the woods! LOL What a day! Not the most we have killed but a great hunt none the less.
Then we topped it off with a nice coon hunt with Flop and HotRod. Flop showed HotRod how to do it. Made 3 trees and got 2 out to them. I'll try to get a picture later from Daniel.
I took this one with my new phone.
