Got a few questions on lifts and tires and things like that.... All I hear around here (from most folks anyways) is that lifts and those huge tires will mess a truck up.... Most ofem claim it will kill the transmission, clutch, and that trucks arnt made for that kind of abuse (how is it abuse in the first place??..) .... There arnt many of us around here that think jacking up trucks with big tires and everything looks good but we are here and Im one ofem that likes it so here are my questions before summer gets here and I start making the mods.... First off, will a lift mess up the truck??.. When I say this I mean will it mess up the speedometer and other gauges, the transmission/clutch, and that kind of thing and basically will it lessen how long it will last??.. Second, if the above is true how big of a tire can I put on a smaller truck without a lift??.. I was thinking 31's or something but I dont know.... Finally, if I do get a lift how high should I go on my truck (Im sure everybody has seen the pics of it by now) and what size tires/rims should I get??.. Thanks in advance, cus my Dad and others have been giving me a hard time about lifting it with tires and everything lately.... They claim its a waste of time and money and the truck will fall apart afterwards....-tim

Well I guess it depends on what kind of lift and the shape of the truck. The home made lifts are hard on a truck and make for a rough ride.A good factory lift is not so rough on a truck.I wouldn't go over 3 or 4 inches on the lift.Any more than that and you will run into drive shaft trouble.I have 31's on my small truck and it doesn't have a lift. But I hunted with a guy that had 33's on a datsun truck.I guess it depends on what you want. But I won't lie a lifted truck doesn't drive like a factory truck does.Mine drives better than some I have drove and a lot better than I thought it would with that much lift.

I put a 4 inch lift on mine..With a 6 " I would have had to change the drive shafts and didn't want to get that deep into it.You do have to change the way you drive with 35" tires.Every thing looks smaller LOL

I think Ive decided that Id be MUCH better off to wait till I get a newer, better truck, before I go fixing it up the way I want.... Id be really ill if I put all that money into a truck with 170,000 miles on it and then the motor die the next day.... I wouldnt be to happy that is for sure.... I think Ill wait and then get me a better truck to fix the way I want.... Maybe a full-size Dodge Ram or something, that should be able to push any 33" tires Id ever wanna use if I get a v8 of some kind.... I think Id be better off to do something like that.... Thanks for the help dd, appreciate it....-tim

I'm in the procces of buying back my first truck, 82 Toyota goin to be turnin 35 inch mud brutes(Possibly). i'm thinkin i'm gonna need a 3 or 4 inch lift, will turn 33's stock susp. its puts a lot of wear on u-joints, ball joints, bushings, etc. (basically anything that rotates on the susp.) larger tires tend to eat cluthes faster than ,close to, stock sized tires also. And i'm with you nastynissan, lifts and big tires look GOOD!

A lift lift will not tear up a truck, factory lifts won't, if their done right . The key to this is the right way. Pinion angle and steering and shifter linkages are the major concerns. Tires will kill the horsepower and fuel economy. I would not put over a 31", unless you are prepared to spend some money on gears. The taller the tire the higher the gear ratio, the weaker the hp of the engine. Sooner or later you will be in the mud and won't have the hp to turn the tires over to keep them clean.
