when tracking with and icom or other scanner how can you tell the distance the dog is away?

Exactly,u can't tell. It will depend on the terrain and thickness of the woods. It will be one of those things u have to get experience with to know.

The only thing I can recommend is trying to turn down the volume and playing with the squelch. I had one of these systems, and did not like it. I prefer Tracker, Quick Track, or Wildlife. in that order. The Tracker fits into pouch when your not using it. You now can get an external adapter to use your Yagi with. Quick Track has a built in AMP. Wildlife is bulkie, but has lead the industry for many years. All 3 systems are great, just depends on what you want and like.

I have a Icom R-10 that I use a GRE super amp on. And when used with Quick Track or Magnum collars I get plenty of range in the mountains here in western Arkansas. And as for range estimation it something that comes with experiance.

i have an r10 and if you know how to use it right they work great from what i have found

i just order a po-528 to try out,way cheaper than anything else i have looked at.Should work about like the icom r-10,we will see.

i got a johnson merlin 10 and ive had pretty good luck with it

I use a AOR8000 scanner (they can be found on ebay) and can track any dog collar on any freq with ease.
