www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.htmlHere's a link for more information of recalled feeds. It's rumored to be spilling over into the dry feed products now. Also on the list is Hill's Science Diet. Mighty dog, already listed, is made for Purina. Makes you wonder, this is from the cheapest to the most expensive feeds listed. Doesn't matter if you're paying 40 cents a pop or $4.40 a pop, it's still pretty much the same thing. Guess that's a little proof in the pudding that the brand/label doesn't make the quality any better, only the price higher. From what I understand, it's the wheat gluten in the feed causing the problem, but I'm not convinced they have it completely nailed down. Makes me really glad I don't feed a mass produced feed from a 'big brand' marketer. LOL, and yep, I already checked, no wheat or wheat gluten in the bag.

Pet food recall expanded The same industrial chemical has been found in a second ingredient.
Last updated: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 10:45 AM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — An industrial chemical that led to a nationwide recall of more than 100 brands of cat and dog foods has been found to contaminate a second pet food ingredient, expanding the recall further.
The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said today. Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate another ingredient, wheat gluten, used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.
Natural Balance said it was recalling all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.
The Pacoima, Calif., company said recent laboratory tests showed the products contain melamine. It believes the source of the contaminant was rice protein concentrate, which the company recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination, it said.
Last month, Menu Foods recalled 60 million cans of dog and cat food after the deaths of 16 pets, mostly cats, that ate its products. The FDA said tests indicated the food was contaminated with melamine, used in making plastics and other industrial processes. Five other companies later recalled pet products also made with wheat gluten tainted by the chemical.

BREAKING NEWS: Costco Kirkland Brand and Lick Your Chops Recalls April 26th, 2007 Two recalls in one post:
American Nutrition is finally recalling their foods containing rice protein concentrate. The recall covers Costco’s Kirkland Signature Super Premium Canned Food, item # 38436, best buy dates of Aug. 21 08 to April 15 of 09.
UPDATE: The ingredient is listed as “rice flourâ€. Pet Connection has details on how Costco’s recall started.
Itchmo has learned that the recall covers two formulations sold in a single case:
Kirkland Signature Super Premium Chicken and Rice Canned food for Dogs Kirkland Signature Super Premium Lamb and Rice Canned food for Dogs American Nutrition says that their products were tested by them, FDA and state officials and melamine was found by one group.
Chenango Valley is adding one more product to the recall list in addition to SmartPak and Drs. Fosters & Smith products:
Lick Your Chops Lamb Meal, Rice & Egg Cat Food in packages with a net weight of 4 lbs. and a code date best used by April 29, 2008. For all recent recalls, check our Recall Update: Thursday.
NOTE: FDA claims they were unaware of either of theses recalls. It’s amazing that after more than a month of recall after recall, that the FDA still can’t get a handle on the information before the blogs do.
