I had a half black and tan, and half walker pup named Dixie, but any ways, she got a huge lump on the back of her neck right below the collar. I didn't know what it was and it concerned me. So after it didn't go away for a couple days, it actually got bigger, it grew to be half the size of a baseball! My husband held her and i felt around a little bit, and I mashed on it and infection literally swirted out all of my husbands shirt!! GROSS, but any ways just wondering if anybody has had a similar experience with their dogs, and if so do you know what causes it?

its a abcess from the sound of it my dogo gyp got over one on her head not to long back that it squirted if it is indeed a abcess is good next thing i would make the hole bigger where it can drain and push 60cc of proxicide through it and let it bubble out .
a puncture of wood a nail or another dog even through play can cause this as well if a shot was giveing under the skin behind the neck that nicked muscle can make them . my gyp bumped her head on the dog box and made hers there is alot of ways it could have happend but again thats as long as its a abcess

Another dog biting it can cause it to even if they are just playing. If the skin was broke it can set up infection..You can get antibiotics at your local feed store for around 10 bucks.I use pen-aqueous on my dogs when they have or, I think they have a wound that would cause a infection. It cost about $10 at the feed store and you give your dog {grown hound} about a 3 CC shot once a day and the lump will be gone in no time.. But this is just my opinion and what I do for my dogs, I'm not a vet..

If you do the shot, don't do for more than 4-5 days. Can cause your dog to have other problems or become immune to the antibiotic. Make sure her collar isn't too loose or too tight. This can cause the infection also because of the friction making an open area and flies and other bacteria a germs can get in. Make sure that you clean daily. Good luck.

Our Bluetick gets these alot. Usually from a puncture from a tooth while playing. We cut a couple of them open and drained them, but have found that with antibiotic pills they go away just as fast. Less chance of worsening the infection than lancing them too.
