I have this dog that is poor or low weight you can see her ribs.I have wormed her twice with Ivermectin in the last 8 weeks. And I'm feeding her a dog food that is hi in protein and fat.I'm feeding her more than I do my other dogs but she want gain weight and my other dogs are healthy..She was poor as a snake and pregnant and had the mange when I picked her up on the side of the road.I have only let her run once to see if she would. And she did a great job for the shape she is in.Other than that she has been on a chain for 10 weeks. She had pups about two days after I found her.And only one lived and it was winged 5 weeks now. And only very little weight gain in those 5 weeks. And my question is does anyone have any ideas that might get this dog looking healthy and at a good weight? she acts healthy and happy but she looks poor.

dd,
Ivomec is really only good for the prevention of heartworms. It won't have any effect on round worms or hook worms which usually keep you dog from gaining weight. What you need to do is get a good worm pill or a liquid wormer.
This is what it says on the side of the Ivermectin label ( Treatment and control of gastroingestional round worms, (including inhibited Ostertagia osteragi), lung worms, grubs, sucking lice, & mange mites in cattle.)
So if I get a worm pill to go with this I should have everything I need to protect the dog right?
Do you give as a preventive or wait until they show signs of worms?

Safeguard (fenbendazole)is safe and gentle on the system. I switched to Valbazen (Albendazole) a few years ago and after a year I switched right back to safeguard because the albendazole was so harsh on their systems. The fenbendazol will get everything but heart worms and certian types of tapes if given three days in a row. I deworm in the mornings and feed at night and this seems to work well. I use Ivormect to prevent heart worms and Droncit on tapes (as needed) This link tells ya what Safeguard (Fenbendazole) will kill, side effects, and what it won't get, www.marvistavet.com/html/body_panacur.html This link tells ya about pyrantel pamoate or Nemex 2 www.marvistavet.com/html/body_pyrantel_pamoate.html

How is she doing now? I know that you probably don't want to hear this, but I got a hound from a guy that said he just couldn't get any meat on her and was going to give up. Just gave her to me, papers and all. I figured, hey, I can fatten her up, then I saw her. She was skin and bones, but happy as could be and could run a coon! I tried every trick that I could think of to put some weight on her, but nothing. Finally took her to the vet to find out that she had liver failure. Told me that she could have been born with a bad liver, orr could be results of a coon bite. Needless to say, we had to put her down. Too bad too, cause she was a good little hound.

shpines She is doing good I put her in the pen on a feeder and she is gaining weight now.She should be in great shape in another week.I was shocked to see how she put the weight on once I put her on the feeder. That first week she tried to eat a feeder full every day. ;D

Hey DD. I had the same problem with a mangey little pup I found on the side of the road. The best thing I found for him was I scrambled eggs every day and put with his hi protein dog food. It wasn't a week or two and he was fat as a tick.

Have not experienced what you are going through with this dog. When I am running my dogs hard in the winter, 1 time a week I feed what the old tymers did. Make a pone of real gressy cornbread , through some cracklin in it , cook just like any other cornbread, feed it to them 1 time a week. Will slick them up inside and out , makes their coat shiney and they will start eating more dog feed. And start putting on weight and you never have to stop hunting them . Works for me

Worm for tape worm as needed.Use safeguard for this. For all other worms I use Droncit. You can order it online without a prescripition. It's a lot cheaper this way.

We worm the first of the mth with ivomec and at the end of the month with liquid safeguard. Every third mth we give the dogs one tube(horse wormer) of safeguard over a 3 day period. Dogs stay too fat for my tastes this way an slim down marginally when we are hunting hard during the summer.

I use the ivomec for heart worms in my beagles and use valbazen for the others three days in a row -
what is the difference in the valbazen and the safeguard?
is the liquid safeguard the same as the paste in a tube, I notice they have a brand for horses and for dogs - is it the same
how much do you give - it looks expensive?

I use ivomec and Nemex2 it gets all the worms.
And i had a problem with my male losing weight. I fed him morning and night and gave him canned dog food every other day in the morning. And then gravy in his food in the evening. Now he is putting on weight everyday. And looks healthier everyday.

You can use either the valbazen or the safeguard to worm with. Both you have to give three days in a row for it to work. I use the paste safeguard for horses give about on inch on a piece of bread does the trick.Cost about $7.50 a tube.
