I have all 15 inch beagles and will burn one up ive seen them within 50 yards of deer when they cross the road. But when we get on a nice buck it seems that deer will always strech out a big lead as far as 20 minuts sometimes more, ive seen it happen alot. so i bought 2 walker puppys this year they've been doin real good, next year im gonna use them strickly for fresh packing on bucks, i hope this will solve our problem..

i think it has all to do with what you like in a hound, to me a 13- 15" is pretty good for real thick brush and can work em good but a 20+" walker in open areas or cedar swamps without much thickets will make the deer run till it drops without a stop. the best deer dogs i found have been 16-18" they can flat run deer in the open but still work em in the thick brush. ive also got me a couple new ones to put on sum jumped ones. we had some bad luck this year with the deer stayin in the thickets and swamp, so i figured if my buddies dogs cant get em out after an hour il put sum fresh ones on em, ive got a 16.5",17" and a pup i hope turns out around that size but might be bigger. the 16.5 is a real good jumper and a good runner but i hope the pup turns out to be too, the 17 is gonna be my runner, hes real real fast, hes built like a grey hound but not skinny or wormed up, hes got fat too but just that racey build to em and loves to run. hopin to get sum more maybe a 16" female to breed and get sum pups.

i have beagles that are 16-17" my cousines have about the same or a little taller. if your runin 14s with 14s/15s its not a big difference, but when you put 14s with 16s or bigger, then your dogs will get left behind and if they dont, youll burn em out real quick just in a year or so. ive seen alot of good little beagles that can realy put it to a deer be burned out by running with faster/ bigger dogs, but dont get me wrong somitims a pack of good runin 13s can realy move em fast threw thick brush but not for long, sometimes it may take 1 hour or more for any sign of deer in front of em in a big block of cedar swamp , jus depends on the dogs not the size. one of my buddies got an 18" that is normaly 10 yards from a deers tailend but his smaller 15s are usualy littl mor than 30 yards from the dog. my 16.5 is usually ahead of most dogs under 16 or dogs that aint from his pedigre/breeding hes not lookin to run faster jus runin on the scent. since he was 5 months old hes been packin with the dogs and runin his own deer at 6 months old, hes got alot of stmina now, so its got alot to do with how much u run em too. hope all this helps with your question, weve all got different ways and views on huntin with hounds but as long as we all are for runin em and preservin this great heritage of runin on any kind of wild game thats all that matters.
