I have been running dogs at our lease for years. I am going to buy some dogs this year. I know how fun it is to hear the chase and want to be able to say that my hounds were running the big one. My question is probably pretty simple but need help. Is a Gyp just a female walker? I have a chance to buy 2Gyps about 3 yrs old that have been running deer or 2 running walkers that are a little over a year old. Can anyone tell me about these dogs.

Gyp or a female dog is a female dog.
I suggest to you that if you have never been around hounds, you need to get an experienced Houndsman to check out these dogs for you. There's a lot of people that are looking to pass of their junk/culls to those that are new to hounds. If you can't find someone that will check them out for you ,make sure you buy from a reliable person with a written guarantee that you can try these dogs out.If you are not satisfied, then you can get a refund. If you post your location, there might be someone on here that can help you out.

The guy that has them works for me so that should help. He raises walkers and said that the two he has left have been runnin at the Fox pen. The gyps are his friend that runs with him. The gyps having been hunting and he wanted to trade him for the two younger males so he can run them in the events at the pen. I will ask him about the trial run. If he is sure of them running, he should not have a problem with that.

A dog in that has been ran in the pens will sometimes perform different outside of the pen.Just keep that in mind.

Yeah bunnyseeker is right, but then sometimes a hound that has been run in the pen would much rather run a deer, and just don't know it yet!! Goodluck!

I got a cull for my first hound that had been ran in a fox pen. She was fast but she didn't bark enough for me. You could cast her out and she would stop to listen where the dogs were and go to them (i guess she picked that trait up from running in the fox pen). I made the guy feel bad that gave her to me and he took her back. Not trying to scare you, just run them before you get someone's culls.

Everything that has been said is true. Not trying to tell you what to do,but you will be better off to find you a couple of young pups just ready to start running. Most of the time you buy someone else's problems.Never buy a dog at night(I learned that the hard way)LOL Good luck
