If any of ya'll get a chance to goto the Outer Banks of North Carolina to do some drum fishing.....GO!!! There's no better place in the world to catch big reds. Several of the world record drum were caught off of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. The last time I went I watched at least 40 drum beached that were atleast 40 " or better, which sounds like a good night but not compared to the 100+ days. Some go in boats but alot go right off the beach, the best place is off the point on Hatteras. If your fimilier with the big Hatteras light house that black and white and swirled ,well you'll be looking at it when your fishing the point. BUT , have your mess togather cause there are several seasoned pros out there, and they will out fish you, out of the forty caught that I seen beached, none were on my line !! Casting distance , good tackle and fresh bait are an absolute must. and don't be surprised when a 70 yr old man out throws you, like I said they're seasoned pros. There's no better place in the world to go surf fishing for Drum then the Outer Banks, if you get the chance...GO!!!!

I would love to go do that. I have caught a good amount of reds, but nothing over 29-30 inches(around 9-10 lbs). Thats inshore fishing, occasionally when we go offshore fishing the guys i go with will catch bigger spawning reds that would go 15-30 lbs, but those are rare. I have seen pictures and read articles about that type of fishing and would love to do it someday. Best surf fishing i ever had was off of st. georqe island,fl. when i helped catch a cooler full of 1lb. whiting! -Not exactly 40 inch redfish...

They catch nicer and alot of them, the site I like going to is saltwatersurffisherman.com . Check out Ockracoke, the tackle shop that does the fishing report is Tradewinds, look at the fishing report archives, they've got some nice pics of some 50"+ drum. I have'nt caught one yet, I've only been up there a few times, so I'm still learning the ropes.I feel the next time will be my time !! I've drum fished for years , but not at this caliper. Like you , my drum fishing consisted of mostly light tackle. I've caught several drum but none over 30". Up there you need 12' rods with bait casters, depending on how turbulant the water is off the point you may need to throw 8 oz sinkers w bait,if you ever hear the term 8 and bait, thats what it means. The point can get seriously ruff, there's two currents that come together and it looks like one big washing machine, the drum love it, the ruffer the better. It's really a site to see when the water is rockin off the point.BY NO MEANS DO YOU SWIM OUT THERE !
