if you were to get into the woods at the crack of dawn with a box full of hounds, and ya pull through the lease ridin, scopin out that drop spot. and here sits a good 8 point standin there, it dont run off..... do you shoot it, or are you a big enough dog hunter that its not the same with out hounds, so you drop the tailgate and put the hounds on him?
hehe how bad have ya got it?!?!

I might get ragged for this but I wouldnt hesitate to take my rifle out and bust him and then turn the dogs out later when I got some help to head the deer off and catch the dogs....

Put the dogs on it, never a doubt about that. I was in my truck 3 years ago and we saw a good stag which the boys wanted to shoot. They didn't and we waited for the others to come and get set up so we could hunt it. What we should have done was opened the crate straight away and he would have had 10 foxhounds right behind him and with the dogs we had then ,he would have been in a lot of trouble. He unfortunately got away as he had a big start on us . Next time i'll just open the crates. If someone didn't have a good one on the wall i could understand them shooting it but it is all about the dogs for me

However once the crates are open they are all fair game regardless of where the dogs are. We take our rifles in the bush while looking for marks , but the boys are not to shoot anything unless they are going to mount the head and it is bigger than what they already have. i would congratulate anyone who shoots the animal standing there like at the start of this thread if it was their first good stag but really it should be run with the hounds

What i should also have said in the last post was that if the deer is an absolute thumper, once in a lifetime model , then commonsense should prevail and you would step out and do the job on him.

My rifle spends more time slung on my back than anywhere else these days.I'd rather hunt it with the hounds and get him fair and square. Most of this year Ive spent sneaking in on bail ups with the camera!Seen heaps of deer this year and almost got that once in a while photo of a good stag bailed but the conditions just weren't right and he got my scent before I could get closer. One of the younger boys took him about 15 mns later.
