Hey I've been hunting for 2 years, & I've seen deer with my bow to far away, & deer when I'm leaving my stand out dark. I've never dog hunted though & I was woundering is dog running fun, do you kill alot of deer, & should I try it. Are you looking to have a great time, ready to hear the roar of a pack of hounds in hot pursuit, make memories that will last a lifetime , enjoy the company of fellow hunters that are there to enjoy the great outdoors and are willing to lend a hand to other hunters when need, learn more about the woods than just where to hang a stand a wind directions, Have something that you can teach your kids and pass it along to them without them getting distracted easily? If you answered is "YES" , you should give dog hunting a try. Do you kill a lot of deer? Depends on the area you hunt and the other hunters you hunt with. With dog hunting, it's not always about killing a lot of deer. It is more about enjoying the great outdoors, listening to the sound of great hound work and enjoying the fellowship of other hunters and houndsmen . We all enjoy harvesting deer but I personally get more enjoyment out of see younger people and first time dog hunters enjoy themselves while experiencing the fellowship of good dog hunters.I'll post some rules to keep in mind if you decide to give it a try. Where are you located? You Might be close to some on here and the would offer to let you tag along.Pm me your location if you don't want to post it on the open forum and I will try to help you get connected with someone.

I live near Helena in Shelby County Alabama, but I would go to Pickens, Greene, or Shelby County Alabama to hunt. I have family that use to dog run about 20 years ago & tell me it was the best hunting they've ever done. So I really would like to try it!

Here is the Alabama Dog Hunters Association link: alabamadoghuntersassociation.com/ You can contact Don Knight (numbers on the link page) or go the club listings and it has contacts there. I'm sure someone would be willing to take you on a hunt. Also contact Doug Coleman with Doddhollow Hunting club in Perry County. Great looking club there and would be a good person for you to learn from.

Sir what is better for running deer? Running Walker Hound or Treeing Walker Coonhound. Not trying to be mean or discourage you in any way, but you are trying to get ahead of yourself with dogs.My suggestion would be to first try dog hunting and see if that is what you like. Then hunt with other dog hunters to see the various types of dogs and how each one is different. After that you can look at getting a hound from a well known dogman and not from a trader that only wants your money. As far as the types of dog, It all depends on what you want in a hound and the type of terrain you hunt. Also depends on the amount of land you have to hunt.

Well I went dog hunting back on the first & second weekend of this month & I loved it. Is was so much more fun compared to sitting in a treestand or shooting house all day & not hearing nor seeing anything. So I was woundering do you know any good clubs in Pickens, Tuscaloosa, or Greene County Alabama for the 2013-14 Hunting Season?

Also sir, I would like to join a club that does the thing where the person who shots the deer gets first choice of meat on that deer & then everyone else who is at the club that day gets part of the deer meat too.
