scribler a good buddy of mine has the Garmin Astro GPS, and IT IS WONDERFUL.... we have never been out of range, i have hunted with it probably a hundred times or more and it is fantastic.. it works great never had a problem with it, we've got off in very thick stuff, in the pouring down rain, and in most places where cell phones don't have service, and it has ALWAYS worked and worked great, I definately recommend it, and would buy one if i had the money

the only way to go is with the garmin astro w/dc-30 collars. if you do, you will be happy you did. i don`t think i could ever hunt with a regular system again.

i have been coon hunting with a guy that has a garmin astro. it has its points that are really great, and it has its place in the hunting world for sure. but it is too new and they still have some improving to do. the first time i saw him use it we turned out and i loved it while the dogs were close up. he knew exactly what the dogs were doing. but the dogs got out and treed and he kept losing signal. his unit said the dogs were 8/10ths of a mile. he couldnt keep the collar and unit in contact and it was across an open pasture. the dogs had gotten in a low creek and the dip in the land gave the system trouble. the last time i hunted with him he didnt use the astro, he said the collar and unit wouldnt link up. so he is having trouble with it and he has to wait on garmin to make it work right..... even when he did use the astro, he would still run his regular tracking collar too.
i think the astro is a great system, they just have some kinks to work out before i spend that kind of money on it. the most useful part of the whole thing is the handheld unit. it is a fully functional gps and if you buy a good topo map to go in it then you have a great set up. but i think they need to get the range and collar comunication figured out a little better.
for a cheap functional unit, the innotekk rd-400 is a great unit. i loved mine. the only reason i went to the quick track was for the ability to track all of the collar frequencies and i gained a little more range. but for about 3-400 you can get an rd-400 with 2 collars and it isnt hard to find collars on ebay and coondawgs.com for cheap that the rd can track.

Gotta say guys. The Garmin is B.A. I've had it for two years now. I have 10 collars. 5 old 20's and 5 new 30's. I did finally burn up a 20 last week, but it is the first time I have had any problems. The new 30's work great.
Everyone I hunt with bad mouths it until they see it in action, then they're amazed when I drive or walk right to every dog we have out while they're driving around listening to beeps.
The only downside is range. I get a steady 3 miles with the Extended antenna. Even if you get a dog out of range it shows you right where they were when you last got a signal. Just go that way and there they will be.
Just what I've experienced for over 2 years now.

i still run my quicktrack 6000m, i would like to get a tracker maxima 5000 just because it is so portable. it doesnt get quite as much range unless you put it on a yagi, but it is about the size of your tv remote.
