Need some ides on pens. Since the majority of our club members live in areas where we can't keep dogs. the pups stay at the camp all year long. We go out once a week to feed, water, and clean. The pens are dirt. Putting gravel or concrete down is not an option since it's a 12 mile boat ride to the camp. Currently the pens are 10x12 with 4-6 dogs in each. I am working on getting them some good shade this year as the summers can be hard on them. What do you reccommend we put down to control odor, bacteria, and fleas/ticks? What do you use for houses? Individual or one big house? Currently we have auto feeders, so keeping the pups fed has been no real problem. What should we feed during summer months? What do you reccommend for hunting season? Any and all construtive ideas are appreciated.

We used to have above ground kennels. Cleaning was easy... just sprayed out the run and all of the boxes were welping boxes so we could lift the lid and have easy access to clean out the bedding. We used cedar chips in the boxes and under the runs. Just rake up mess under the runs and dispose. You can buy kits, but we did make a couple on our own that were just as good, but a little cheaper.

Slicker,
I always sprayed diesel when the temps start to warm up. This will help with fleas and ticks. I also like to spread salt a couple times a year. This helps with worms. Spreading lime wouldn't be a bad option either in order to help with odor and bacteria. A good quality feed will also help with odor. Feeding cheap feed will just cause the stool to be looser and smell more. I also picked up some Bayer Tree and Shrub spray form Lowe's for controlling fleas. Put 15 ml. along the back of the neck and down the back a few times during the summer and you won't have problems with fleas.

The old club I was in had dirt pens. The fleas killed more than one dog ever year. We feed StarPro in the purple bag. The pens were 30x40 so the area had a good amount of room for the droppings. We kept 15 to 20 dogs on the ground at seasons end, but normally lost between 5 and 8 every year. I now have mine at home where I can worm them and keep fresh water for them. I clean the pens once every other week or when it gets bad. I'm not for certain but I was told that the last year they had dogs they put powder lime down for the fleas and wound up with a case of mange. They lost almost every dog that year and had to go buy more from a pen. Anyone ever heard of that happening?

Progator, lime will do nothing for fleas or the manage.Sounds to me like the dogs had trouble with fleas and they thought it was the manage.Bad cases of fleas will make them loose their hair and will even kill dogs.Go to any farm supply store and buy some bayer tree and shrub.Place along the shoulder blades for fleas. If it's really bad,you can spray the pens also.Another thing you can use in the pen for fleas is borax detergent.Sprinkle lightly and wet light.Worming should be done monthly regardless or it is not as effective.LIme is good in pens to help cut down on odor.Never had it to kill a dog.

It doesn't matter now, they can't run now. I do all my caring at home instead of letting them stay in the woods year round. I do worm once a month, and spray Frontline on them.

I do like bolo also, i spray a little offroad diesel around the pens combine with the bayer tree and shrub. this combo along with the ocassional flea dip and bayer along the back will take care of all pests- including the ants I keep my dog houses off the ground and i have thick conveyor belts for the floor of my pens. It really helps out compared to the dirt pens i had before with odor and pests.

I will be going down to the club this weekend to do a lil preventive maintenence in our kennels. Bayer has another product out that is specifically for fleas and ticks. I used this product last summer and let me tell you it worked great. All the pens were infested with fleas and ticks really bad. I spryed all kennels and sprayed the dogs down with this stuff and we had no more problems rest of the summer. As for worming I give Ivomec once a month. and give a 12cc dose of the bayer flea and tick behind there shoulder blade once a month. As for the cleaning I have a 14 yr old son that puts on his rubber boots and grabs the flat head shovel and a sprayer and goes to work.. He is learnin the ways of the dog hunter!!! LOL

I know it but he has to start somewhere!!! haha
He's a great kid! He is the future dog driver. He was raised dog hunting and loves every bit of it. He can hunt in a tree stand and knows his stuff when it comes to hunting thats for sure. He wants to go to MSU to study wildlife biology.. I'm very proud of that young man. I pray everyday for him.

Well I told him if wasn't planning on going to a good university somewhere he was going to join the arm forces...LOL well, needless to say he is working real hard to get into a good university. He came home the other day with a note from school saying that he was nominated to join the national junior society. I wrote the check as soon as I finished reading that note!!
